Google "My Search History (Beta)"

Ever find what you're looking for with Google, then promptly forget what you found? If so, you'll enjoy My Search History, a new service on Google Labs which lets you view and manage your search history from any computer via "My Search History" links in the upper-right corner of your Google home page and search results pages.

My Search History shows you all the searches you've done on Google and the search results you've clicked on, and presents this information in ways we think are most useful. If you don't remember an exact search query, for instance, but you do remember when you did the search, you can use My Search History's calendar feature to check the searches you did on a given day and navigate to any of them with a single click. Full-text search over your history means you can easily find any search query or results page. We also show you related history over time; you can review everything Google has ever shown you about "apples", "bass fishing" or "the wizard of oz," for instance, by clicking the "Related history" link next to any search term when it appears.

My Search History also gives you useful info while you're searching on Google. Next to your search results, you'll see how many times you've visited a certain search result and the last time you viewed it. And if we think it will help you find what you're looking for, we'll grab pages you've already clicked on and put them above your regular web results.

Mesothelioma treatment

The treatment depends first of all on which typeof mesothelioma you have got.The most common treatment options aresurgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy. One ofthese options can be used or there can be a combination of them.

Mesothelioma symptoms

Symptoms of mesothelioma are difficult to notice in an early stage. And when you start to get problems it can be very diffuse and easily diagnosed as something else. When the symptoms occur they are often caused by the growing cancer pressing on a nerve or an organ, which means your symptom could be anything from pain in the chest or abdomen to diarrhea, poor appetite or abnormal loss of weight. The main reason for this cancer is exposure to asbestos. But this exposure can be something that happened 30 to 50 years ago. The incubation period is very long.

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer. This cancer attacks the mesothelium, a membrane that protects most internal organs in the body. Most people developing mesothelioma have been in contact with asbestos in some way.

Fake Microsoft Security Trojan on the Loose, Antivirus Firm Says

A new campaign by malicious hackers uses a Web site designed to look like Microsoft's Windows Update page to trick unwitting Internet users into infecting their computers with a Trojan horse remote access program, according to antivirus experts at Sophos.

The scam uses e-mail messages that appear to come from Microsoft to get recipients to visit a Web page that uploads the malicious program. Using the promise of Windows software patches to distribute malicious code isn't new. However, the latest attacks show that scammers are adopting strategies used by phishers to evade detection by gateway and desktop antivirus programs, says Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

The attack was first detected on Thursday in Sophos's Vancouver, Canada, lab after it was distributed in a spam campaign. The messages have subject lines like "Update your windows machine" or "Urgent Windows Update," Cluley says.

What Happens

A link in the body of the e-mail message appears to take users to the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, but would actually forward them to a Web site operated by the attackers and install a Trojan horse program called DSNX-05, according to Sophos.

The Web site run by the hackers was registered to an Internet service provider in Toronto, but it has since been shut down. The site looked very much like the actual Microsoft Windows Update page and displayed Microsoft's corporate logo. One clue that something was amiss: The URL displayed in the Web browser address bar showed only the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the site, instead of the Windows Update address, Cluley says. Sophos does not know how many Internet users may have fallen for the ruse, he adds.

The method of attack is similar to the phishing identity theft attacks that have become common in the last year. As with many phishing attacks, gateway antivirus software does not detect the scam, because there is no malicious code in the e-mail. Desktop antivirus software with spam detection could spot the e-mail, but only if an antispam definition for the attack had been created and the user had updated the antispam definitions for their product, according to Cluley.
Real Update Coming April 12

Those behind the attack may have been trying to capitalize on anticipation of Microsoft's upcoming software security patch release next Tuesday, Cluley suggests. On Thursday, the Redmond, Washington, company said it intends to put out a number of security patches for its software.

"It's such a shame that, just as we're beginning to teach people more about security updates, cybercriminals are exploiting that," Cluley laments.

Sophos points out that Microsoft does not issue security warnings in the manner used by this attack. E-mail users should be on guard when receiving an unsolicited e-mail that contains an attachment or asks the reader to click a link to a Web page, Cluley says.

Although the Web page used in the latest attack has been disabled, those behind the scam could post the content in a new location and restart the attack, he warns, adding, "It's hard being an average Internet user. You just can't trust anyone."

Third Party Merchants

Here's a list of some third party merchants that you might want to consider if you're looking for ways to accept credit card payments. I have not tried any of them myself (as a vendor) so I cannot vouch for any of them. Check them out carefully and use them at your own risk.

Note that rates and stuff that I publish below were correct at the time I investigated these vendors. It may have changed by the time you read this since I investigated them quite a while back.

2checkout.com: One time $49 setup fee. Transaction fee of 4.5% of the total amount. Very reliable service, we use and recommend 2checkout.com

CCBill: There are no setup fees. Transaction fees vary (I can't find the schedule though) depending on the volume of sales in each accounting period. According to their website, "these fees are never more than 13.5% of revenues charged during this one-week period for CWIE hosting clients and 14.5% for non-hosting clients".

CCNow: This is only for people who ship tangible, physical products. There is no setup fee, and they charge 9% per transaction except in the November and December where the fees are 8% per transaction (yes, lower).

Clickbank: There is a one time setup fee (US$49.95) and a transaction fee of US$1 plus 7.5% of sale price. There are no other monthly fees. This is only for people who sell services or deliver products over the internet (not for those who need to ship physical products).

PayPal: If you are a Premier or Business account user, you get charged US$0.25 for transactions of US$15 and below, 1.9% plus US$0.25 for transactions above US$15 when your customers pay by credit card. They require your customers to sign up for their services before they can pay you. This can be a deterrent for your customers.

ProPay: A new competitor to PayPal (see elsewhere on this page) that currently only caters to US residents. You have to pay a $35 fee to sign up, but there are no monthly charges.

RegNow: Designed for software authors to sell their ware, this merchant deducts 20% of your sale price with a minimum of US$2.00 for their commission. There are also other charges for sales generated by your affiliates, etc.

Share-It: This service is for shareware authors. They charge US$2.95 plus 4% per order, and US$1.95 plus 4% for the 1000th order of the month and above. There are also charges for mailing you your cheque in some instances.

Techniques to Remove Negative Credit

The following techniques will help correct your credit and should be done with all Credit Bureaus.

In this section you will learn the ways of removing negative items from your credit file. These methods are sometimes referred to as "Credit Repair". These are the exact same methods credit repair clinics and attorneys charge up to $3,500 to perform. Since they do not always do it correctly, consumers have been taken for millions of dollars over the past years. We will also show you all the jealously guarded secrets on how to outsmart creditors who are damaging your credit!

What the Credit Bureaus Don't Tell You

1. Each item on your credit report must be proven or it cannot remain in the report. If the credit bureau cannot verify the item when investigated, it must be removed from your file whether or not it's true.

2. Every negative entry on your report can be denied or challenged at any time. The bureau must reinvestigate and if that item cannot be verified within a "reasonable amount of time", it must be removed from the file.

3. Items when challenged can be mistakenly erased. Consumers say they often experience computer operator mistakes.

4. Many times the creditor does not re-verify in time or the credit bureau is busy and does not handle your dispute properly. It must then be deleted.

5. The older an item, the more difficult re-verification is. It is possible it cannot be verified because records may no longer exist after 1 or 2 years.

Dealing with Credit Bureaus

It is essential to understand that Credit Bureaus are nothing more than record keepers.

Simply put, they keep a record of who has given you credit, when they gave you credit, how much credit you are given and whether or not you paid it back on time. When you want to obtain credit cards, loans, financing for a car or home, leases, apartments and sometimes even employment, the lender or bank will check your credit to see your financial history.

Credit Bureaus are paid by the people who request your credit file.
Credit Bureaus have no legal power over you. Banks, police or the government does not run them; so don't be intimidated by them. They are the Credit Bureaus because they own large computer systems capable of storing credit information on everyone in the United States. However, because of the tremendous amounts of information on their computers, their method of storing information is very basic and ridden with many errors. Since the bureaus have made so many errors in the past, all Federal Laws regarding credit information are very much in your favor.

Credit Scoring and the Lending Industry

When you apply for a mortgage, your lender will request a credit report from a credit reporting company. This is usually a local or regional company. This company pulls together a credit report electronically. It usually comes from one or more of the major repositories, but it can come from several sources.

Along with the information, the local credit reporting company receives a numerical score. The score represents a composite of the borrower's credit history, employment, ability to save, and so on. The most famous of these scores is known as the FICO score, which was a model developed by the Fair-Isaacs Company a number of years ago. It is believed that the Beacon and TransUnion scores are really scoring information provided by the Fair-Isaacs Company, but have been tweaked somewhat by the other bureaus. That is partly true, but what most people don't know is that, with information streaming into their credit file almost everyday, the scores can change daily. That is why someone can apply for a mortgage with one company today and have a FICO score of, say, 717, and apply with another lender a week later and that score can be higher or lower, depending on the information received at the repositories in the interim.

The truth is that the Fair-Isaacs Company and the major credit repositories do not divulge how the scoring model works. Due to the level of erroneous reporting to peoples' credit files, there has been pressure on Congress lately to make the credit repositories more accountable for the accuracy of the information they report AND to divulge what goes into the scoring models, so that people can know what to do to improve their scores.

Why is this important? The lending industry is moving toward "risk-based" pricing. In plain English, this means that the higher one's credit scores, the less paper they will have to provide to prove that they are creditworthy AND the interest rate and/or fees a borrower pays will be based on the level of their scores.

This system, while perhaps unfair to some, will be great for those who maintain impeccable credit. It's one way that good credit risks can be rewarded. In the past year, we in the industry have already seen a dramatic reduction in paperwork requirements and "risk-based" pricing (rates and fees) has become commonplace.

If you have recently obtained your credit report and you are not happy with what was reported, you can take steps to correct the erroneous information on it. There are also proactive things you can do to improve your scores, if you are anticipating applying for a mortgage anytime soon. While I intend to go into the details of correcting erroneous credit information in Part II, I can give you a few hints now as to how to be proactive in improving your scores from where you are today.

The first is the most obvious. Pay all your payments on time. The second is, don't apply for any new credit unnecessarily. Every time you sign and return a new credit card offering, or open that second account at a department store because you get a 15% discount, an inquiry will be generated and that will reduce your score. The third is that if you must maintain credit card balances, try to keep them at a level that is 35% - 40% of the maximum credit limit. In other words, if the credit limit is $1,000, try to keep your running balance below $400. Believe it or not, consolidating all your credit cards onto one can hurt you, if the balance is at the credit limit. The fourth is, if you get into a dispute with the phone company and it isn't a huge amount, pay it and move on. Having one or more collections, even if they are small amounts, can really hurt your score.

Credit Scoring... the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Most anyone who has obtained a home mortgage in the past 5 years or so has heard about credit scoring. How many of you have been told "your scores are great", or "if your score were 10 points higher, your rate would be better by 1/4 point"? Probably most of you.

We in the industry started to become aware of "scoring models", as they are called, as early as 1994. The use of scoring models in the mortgage industry came about as the major secondary market players, known as Fannie Mae and Freebie Mac, started to develop automated underwriting systems. They had been in use for a long time for auto lenders and credit card issuers.

The early creators of the automated underwriting systems felt that, if someone could go to a Mercedes dealership at 10 am and drive off the showroom floor an hour later with a $100,000 car (still more expensive than homes are in many parts of the country), they ought to be able to obtain a home loan the same way. The logic in this should be obvious... after all, cars are rolling stock, so they can disappear, they depreciate and usually people don't live in them. Houses are attached to a foundation, they usually appreciate and people usually live in them. Using that logic, the industry should be able to make the home buying process easier for everyone.

This theory sounds good, but it is only in the last year that we have seen some relief from the mountains of paper that go into loan files, and it is because the scoring models have become more refined. Still, there is progress yet to be made and the industry is grinding slowly in that direction. Scoring models figure prominently in the future of how people obtain home mortgages.

Most people know that most creditors use credit report agencies for obtaining information on a person when they have applied for any type of financing. However, there are actually two levels of credit reporting agencies. There are three major repositories of credit and background information. They are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. When someone obtains credit, the creditor reports the payment history to these repositories. This is usually done monthly but may be done on an irregular basis. These repositories simply accept the information as it comes in electronically and they DO NOT check the accuracy of the information.

The credit repositories and other agencies also maintain other background information on every person in the country who has a Social Security number or other identifying information. The other agencies may include the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Medical Information Board, the FBI, local law enforcement agencies, the county recorders for each county (public records repositories), etc. Even the mortgage industry has a central repository for borrowers and lenders who may have been involved in fraudulent activities in the making of mortgage loans.

Yahoo Proposes Anti-Spam Standard For Internet

When it comes to proposed technical solutions to spam, I'm a pessimist in general and confirmed skeptic at heart. Such proposals, in their attempts to make spamming impossible, invariably force everyone to change all their mailing software, dooming any practical prospects of the plan.

However, "invariably" could be too strong a word. For example, Yahoo, which claims to be the largest mail provider in the U.S., recently proposed a domain-level authentication system to combat spam. What's interesting here is its conscious attempt not to overreach. The company is still being circumspect in releasing details of its "Domain Keys" system publicly because the proposal is still being formulated, but officials did share the substance of the plan.

What would SMTP authentication accomplish? It wouldn't, in and of itself, prevent someone from spamming. What it would do is allow spammers to be identified and effectively blacklisted.

Authentication systems usually involve digital certificates, perhaps even for each user. For e-mail the sender might sign each message with his or her private key, and after looking up the sender's public key in some publicly-available system, usually a certificate authority, the recipient could confirm that the message was in fact signed by the person claiming to be the sender.

Yahoo's Domain Keys proposal has two interesting innovations that make it different and intriguing: First, authentication is only performed on a domain level, not the user level.

For example, in a world running the Domain Keys system if you get a message from [email protected], you could confirm that it really did come from hotmail.com. That's well and good in the case of Hotmail, since it's safe to assume that Hotmail has enough internal authentication that the sending user really was wacka-wacka.

But what about a message from [email protected]? You may be able to confirm that it really came from fraunkensteen.com, but did it really come from igor? This actually could be an issue if mail.fraunkensteen.com isn't very picky about who it accepts SMTP connections from. Some have suggested that spammers could simply move to a series of new, cheap throwaway domains as old ones become blacklisted. This is a reasonable concern, but I'm not sure how serious it is.

The other interesting innovation with Yahoo's plan is that no fancy and expensive certificate authorities are involved. Instead, the domain's public key is stored in DNS, where everyone can get at it fairly easily to check signatures.

Domain Keys would also present a problem to users (like me) who use a From: address with a domain different that the one for the SMTP server sending the message. Because the From: address is the most obvious spot to check for domain authentication, it's the one used by Domain Keys (at least in the initial proposal) for recipients to check.

Certainly, I agree that if you have to pick one address to check, From: is the only one to pick. Still, many users have From: addresses with a different domain than their SMTP server. Domain Keys would cause problems, at least in the short term, for folks that travels and for users in Internet cafes. No doubt it would burden administrators who will have to make sure that client systems are using the right SMTP server to correspond to their From: address, something that doesn't matter now.

ahoo Domain Keys: Another Ineffective Spam Remedy

To paraphrase an old Klingon proverb, there can be no spam solution, so long as e-mail is free. Yahoo today unveiled plans to launch its Domain Keys software as an open-source toolkit in 2004. The intent is to allow developers of major e-mail systems to integrate Yahoo’s public/private key authentication system into their own software and thus create momentum for a standard whose raison d’etre is identify verification. This is a commendable effort, but a closer look reveals that it will not only not stop the spam problem, it may have almost no effect at all.

The first hurdle is that spam is not currently illegal in the United States. A quick check on David E. Sorkin’s excellent spamlaws.com reveals that the United States is strangely bereft of such laws at the federal level, especially compared to other countries in the world. What is the good of identifying the senders of junk mail if we have no legal recourse against them?

Lawrence Lessig has already staked his Stanford Law School Professorship on the bet that legislation against unsolicited e-mail – if ever enacted – would significantly reduce the amount of the spam received in the United States. And it might, for a time, as US-based spamming operations are shut down (assuming the law was enforced). But then there would be a second hurdle – that an increasing amount of spam is coming from foreign countries whose legal systems have bigger problems than Americans being annoyed at receiving free junk mail.

There are problems from a technical perspective as well. Yahoo’s scheme works by authenticating the source ISP, requiring its infrastructure to be upgraded to support their technology, but not their users’. If authentication is not possible, then the theory is that the e-mail would be rejected by systems using this platform. But of course, unless 99.9% of e-mail users upgrade to such a system, rejecting e-mail from other users would be an even more draconian approach than challenge/response solutions.

The adoption of such a technology would segment across various dimensions, but economic factors would likely be the most important. In other words, large corporations, educational institutions and commercial ISP’s – all primarily in first world nations –would be able to deploy these solutions in a systematic fashion. But the rest of the world, without large IT departments to maintain their networks, would be left behind. Since one of the driving forces behind e-mail adoption has been universal communication, this is simply not acceptable. So in all likelihood, it would have to be integrated with a challenge/response architecture to be viable.

But challenge/response technology’s fundamental problem is making contact for the first time. Simply put, the first e-mail you send to someone will not be received by them – until you authenticate yourself. If your sending e-mail device has a different reply-to address, then this introduces significant delays in message transmission. A user’s level of Internet experience correlates positively with both the amount of spam they receive as well as the importance of e-mail in their daily lives. The reason most such power users have not adopted challenge/response technology is because the benefit of immediately receiving new e-mail – and the guarantee of receiving all e-mail – outweighs the annoyance of dealing with spam.

Regular US mail is a completely open system, where anyone can send a piece of mail to anyone else, without a return address, or with a false one. One of the reasons regular junk mail isn’t as annoying as spam is because of the variable cost associated with sending physical mail. Junk mailers will simply not send out a campaign unless their projected response rate is high enough to justify the cost of sending the mail. Since junk e-mail is available at zero variable cost to spammers, they can sell their services to unscrupulous organizations at far lower rates than physical mail, making spam campaigns far more cost effective. Thus the average person probably gets a lot more spam – and of a far more graphic nature, due the anonymous benefits of Internet commerce – than they get junk mail.

Associating a very small fee with each e-mail – say one tenth of a cent for “postage”, as has been proposed by some – would not affect the amount of e-mail sent by most individuals (1,000 e-mails would cost only $1) but it would effectively destroy the spamming business (1,000,000 e-mails would suddenly cost $1,000).

The difficulty is moving the world to a new standard – particularly when many foreign companies, especially in former Soviet republics, are employing some of the world’s most talented programmers to fight against spam reduction efforts. The only solution will likely be a brand new Internet.

Asbestos Disease

The most common forms of asbestos disease are pleural plaques, asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Asbestosis is a chronic, prolonged lung disease that is caused by continuous inhalation of asbestos particles. However, asbestosis is not cancerous. The second form, mesothelioma is a cancer that attacks mesothelium and is most commonly found in the lung. Mesothelioma is rare or nonexistent in non-asbestos exposed populations but is becoming more common among asbestos-exposed individuals. In the United States, there is no other known proven cause of mesothelioma other than asbestos. Unlike other forms of lung cancer, mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs and not a cancer that occurs inside the lung. Mesothelioma causes the cells of the mesothelium to become abnormal and infinitely reproduce.

A normal mesothelium cell (or any cell for that matter) can only reproduce a certain amount of times. This keeps certain cells from invading other cells. Cancer occurs when those cells become mutated and their limits are removed, allowing them to reproduce uncontrollably. These abnormal cells then form a lump that is known as a tumor. In a benign tumor the abnormal cells do not spread into surrounding areas, but malignant tumors do have the ability to spread. If the tumor is left untreated then it may spread and destroy the neighboring tissue. Sometimes cells can even break off the original tumor and spread to other organs and tissue through the bloodstream or the lympathic system. The lympathic system is part of the immune system. It is a complex system that includes the bone marrow, the thymus and the spleen, and lymph nodes throughout the body that are connected by a network of lympathic vessels. When the cancer cells reach a new site they may continue to divide and form a new tumor, which is referred to as a secondary tumor or a metastasis.

Mesothelial cells line the chest cavity, the abdominal cavity, and the cavity around the heart. They also cover the outer surface of most internal organs. The tissue that is formed by these mesothelial cells is called mesothelium. Mesothelium helps protect the organs by producing a lubricating fluid that lets organs move around. This fluid makes it easier for the lungs to expand and move around inside the chest during breathing. The mesothelium in the chest is called the pleura and the mesothelium around the abdomen is known as the peritoneum. The mesothelium around the heart (or the pericardial cavity, a sac like space around the heart) is called the pericardium.

The asbestos disease mesothelioma has a long latency period, where it is present but not evident or active. The disease can lie dormant for ten to sixty years after being exposed to asbestos. Because of this, it is often hard to determine the cause of mesothelioma.

History of Asbestos

Asbestos has been used for more than 2,000 years. It was named by the Ancient Greeks, its name meaning "inextinguishable". The Greeks also noted its harmful biological effects. Even though the Greek geographer Strabo and the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder both observed the "sickness of the lungs" in the slaves that wove asbestos into cloth, they were in such awe of asbestos' seemingly magical properties that they ignored the symptoms.

The Greeks used asbestos for the wicks of the eternal flames of the vestal virgins, as the funeral dress for the cremation of kings, and as napkins. It is rumored that Romans would clean asbestos napkins by throwing them in the fire. The asbestos cloth would come out of the fire whiter than it went in, so the Romans named asbestos "amiantus", meaning "unpolluted".

Use of asbestos declined during the Middle Ages, yet some say that Charlemagne had asbestos tablecloths. Marco Polo was also shown items made from asbestos cloth on his travels.

Asbestos use was brought back in the 1700s, but did not become popular until the Industrial Revolution during the late 1800s. It then began to be used as insulation for steam pipes, turbines, boilers, kilns, ovens, and other high-temperature products. Ancient observations of the health risks of asbestos were either forgotten or ignored.

At the turn of the twentieth century, researchers began to notice a large number of deaths and lung problems in asbestos mining towns. In 1917 and 1918, it was observed by several studies in the United States that asbestos workers were dying unnaturally young.

The first diagnosis of asbestosis was made in 1924. A woman had been working with asbestos since she was thirteen. She died when she was thirty-three years old, and an English doctor determined that the cause of death was what he called "asbestosis". Because of this, a study was done on asbestos workers in England. Twenty-five percent of them showed evidence of asbestos-related lung disease. Laws were passed in 1931 to increase ventilation and to make asbestosis an excusable work-related disease. It would take the United States ten more years to make these steps.

In the 1930s major medical journals began to publish articles that linked asbestos to cancer. The re-discovery of asbestos-related diseases were put on the back burner for several years due to the emergence of silicosis (a lung disease caused by silica dust inhalation). The affected workers brought $300 million in lawsuits against their employers. This served as a warning to the asbestos companies, and afterwards they tried to cover up the health effects of asbestos. Asbestos companies continued to use asbestos in manufacturing and construction. Despite that many materials, such as fiberglass insulation, were created to replace asbestos, companies that used asbestos ignored the safer alternatives. They ignored the danger for the sake of profits, much like the tobacco industry. The conduct of the asbestos companies is especially egregious, however, because the victims were largely exploited workers who were unaware of the serious health risks they were exposed to on a daily basis.

Mesothelioma

Tumors of the mesothelium can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Since malignant mesothelioma is much more common than benign mesothelioma it is often simply called mesothelioma. Characteristics of a malignant tumor are that it has the ability to spread to other parts of the body, making it much more dangerous.

Malignant mesothelioma is divided into three types: epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and mixed/biphasic. 50% to 70% of mesothelioma cases are epithelioid, which also has the best prognosis (outlook for survival). 7% to 20% are of the sarcomatoid type, and 20% to 35% are the mixed/biphasic type. Epithelioid affects the membranous tissue covering internal organs and other internal surfaces of the body. Sarcomatoid arises from supportive tissue, such as bone, muscles, cartilage, or fat. Biphasic mesothelioma has features of both epithelioid and sarcomatoid. The treatment options are the same for each type.

Approximately three-fourths of mesothelioma cases start in the chest cavity and are known as pleural mesothelioma. Another 10% to 20% begin in the abdomen and are called peritoneal mesothelioma. Those starting in the cavity around the heart, or pericardial mesothelioma, are very rare. The covering layer of the testicles is actually an outpouching of peritoneum into the scrotum. Mesothelioma that affects this covering of the testicles is quite uncommon.

Mesothelioma is still fairly rare. There are about 2,000 to 3,000 new cases per year in the United States. Most of the people who are diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma are over fifty years old and is seen more often with people in their seventies, since they were exposed to asbestos in the 1940s-50s or earlier. Those who were exposed to asbestos in the 1960s-70s may be diagnosed in years to come. The disease attacks men 3 to 5 times more than women. Men are more likely then women to get this disease because men held more construction positions than women in past decades (before the women's rights movement had taken place). Mesothelioma is also more common to Caucasians than in African Americans. Even though this disease is rare it is very serious. By the time it is diagnosed it is often in its advanced stages, making the outlook not as good as it is for other cancers that are found earlier. The average survival time is about 1 to 2 years after being diagnosed. Of course, survival rates are increasing due to advances in medical technology and new treatments that are being developed for mesothelioma.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

A thin membrane of mesothelial cells, known as the peritoneum envelops many of the organs in the abdomen. Peritoneal mesothelioma is a tumor that is on this membrane. Its only known cause is exposure to asbestos, and because it can lay dormant for many years it is not detected until the tumor has begun to grow. Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for about one-fifth of all mesothelioma cases.

Like any cancer, peritoneal mesothelioma can be either benign or malignant. Mesothelioma is sometimes diagnosed by chance, before any symptoms have appeared. For example, the tumor is sometimes seen on a routine abdominal x-ray for a check-up or before surgery.

The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma typically include abdominal pains, weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, and abdominal swelling. Fluid often accumulates in the peritoneal space, a condition known as ascites. Over time the symptoms can become more and more severe.

The growing tumor can exert increasing pressure on the organs in the abdomen, leading to bowel obstruction and distention. If the tumor presses upward, it can limit breathing. The tumor may push against areas with many nerve fibers, and the bowel distends, the amount of pain can increase.

X-rays and CT scans are, typically, the first step towards detecting peritoneal mesothelioma. The actual diagnosis is achieved by obtaining a piece of tissue. The procedure of looking at the peritoneum is known as a peritoneoscopy and requires anesthesia. If an abnormality is seen, the doctor will attempt to obtain a tissue sample - this procedure is called a biopsy. A pathologist will make a diagnosis by a microscopic analysis of specialized stains.

There are at least two explanations for how asbestos fibers can get into the peritoneum. The first is that fibers caught by the mucus of the trachea and bronchi are swallowed. Some fibers lodge in the intestinal tract and from there they can move through the intestinal wall into the peritoneum. The second explanation is that fibers that lodge in the lungs can move into the lymphatic system and be transported to the peritoneum.

Medical science does not know exactly how or why, at a cellular level, a carcinogen like asbestos causes a cell to become cancerous. It is not known whether only one fiber can cause a tumor to develop or whether it takes many fibers, or what the exact conditions and predisposition are for this change to happen.

At this time there are treatments, but no known cure, for peritoneal mesothelioma. The prognosis depends on various factors, including the size and stage of the tumor, its extent, the cell type, and whether or not the tumor responds to treatment.

However, the options for relief and treatment of people with peritoneal mesothelioma have improved, especially for those whose cancer is diagnosed early and treated vigorously. Many people receive a combination of therapies, or multimodal therapy. Specific types of treatment include chemotherapy and other drug-based therapies, radiation therapy, and surgery. There are also clinical trials and various experimental treatments like gene therapy and immunotherapy, and antiangiogenesis drugs.

Mesothelioma, Asbestosis and Lung Cancer Information

If you or a loved one has Mesothelioma, the disease is the result of being exposed to asbestos. Many asbestos manufacturers and distributors knew for decades that asbestos was hazardous, yet made a business decision not to warn people of those hazards.

As a result, you may have a right of recovery against those manufacturers, which can help defray the costs of treatment and provide compensation for your pain and suffering. Attorneys associated with this web site can help you with medical insurance coverage issues and bringing lawsuits on your behalf.

Again and again negligent companies have challenged mesothelioma patients in court, and juries have awarded billions of dollars to victims. Many of the responsible companies have set aside large funds to compensate people injured by asbestos products they produced throughout this century.

Bad Credit Credit Cards

This is the page we really want everyone to read. Many people have made some very costly mistakes when it came to their credit cards. They ended up in a great deal of debt, and now offer us the advice to never go near credit cards again.

What they don"t realize is that when used correctly, credit cards are a wonderful and excellent financial tool. Even people who have landed in dire financial straits can get credit card offers. Usually these are for bad credit cards.

There are secured credit cards, and there are unsecured credit cards. If you"re looking into offers for bad credit credit cards, you"re likely looking at secured credit cards. These are cards that are specifically formulated to help people with poor credit get the benefits of having a credit card.

With a secured credit card, the card"s account is usually tied to a savings account. This account is what "secures" the card. In other words, if you have $500 in the account, your credit limit on your secured card is $500. With this security, a credit card company can offer bad credit credit cards to even the worst credit risks.

Is A Debt Consolidation Loan Right For You?

In society today, it is easier than ever before to find yourself wallowing in debt. Credit cards, medical expenses, and student loans are just a few of the ways that people find themselves buried in debt before they know what is happening. If this describes your situation, take heart. You are not alone. There are ways to work your way out of debt if you just know where to look. For many people, a debt consolidation loan is the answer they’ve been looking for.

Debt consolidation loans offer you the opportunity to pay off a variety of other higher interest, unsecured loans with one single payment. These loans are usually at a lower interest rate than high interest credit cards and other such loans. These loans are tailored toward the consumer who cannot meet their monthly financial obligations and are at risk of ruining their credit. As an added bonus, the lender assumes responsibility of all the debt covered in the loan and therefore the creditors no longer come to you for payment.

Although a debt consolidation loan can be a lifesaver to those in a financial black hole, there are aspects of the loan that need to be taken into consideration before signing anything. You need to know what the loan fees are. Many banking institutions offer small loan fees but there are lenders out there that will take advantage of your situation and charge fees that are exaggerated. Know what your payments and interest rate will be. Both should be lower than the amount of the monthly payments and interest you are already paying. Find out in advance what kind of effect the loan will have on your credit. Don’t go with a company that isn’t forthcoming on this issue.
